Virtual Camera Without OBS: The Easiest Way to Change Your Webcam on Windows
OBS used to be the only free way to send edited video into a call. On Windows 11, apps can add their own camera, and setup drops to a few clicks.
Why people used OBS
Call apps like WhatsApp, Zoom and Teams only accept a camera. If you want to send anything else, like a face swap, a filter or a scene, you need software that pretends to be a camera. For years that meant OBS Studio: build a scene, then press Start Virtual Camera.
OBS is excellent for streaming, but for a quick call it's a lot: install it, add a window capture, crop it, start the virtual camera, and remember to stop it afterwards. Our the OBS Virtual Camera guide walks through it if you still want that route.
What changed on Windows 11
Windows 11 lets apps register their own virtual camera with the system. The camera shows up in every app's camera list next to your real webcam, with no plugins and no OBS. It only works while the app that owns it is running.
Face swap without OBS: FaceLive Camera
FaceLive Camera for Windows uses this to add a webcam called FaceLive Camera:
- Download FaceLive Camera and run the installer (it adds the camera).
- Press Start camera, pick a face and press Transform.
- In WhatsApp, Zoom, Teams, Meet, Discord or Telegram, choose FaceLive Camera.
That's it. There's nothing to capture or crop, and nothing to remember to stop.
OBS Virtual Camera vs FaceLive Camera
| OBS Virtual Camera | FaceLive Camera | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Scene, window capture, crop | Install once, press Transform |
| Works in | Any app that picks a camera | Any app that picks a camera |
| Face swap | Needs the FaceLive browser studio too | Built in |
| Scenes and overlays | Yes, full control | No, it's just your AI face |
| Mac | Yes | Not yet |
If you stream with overlays and scenes, keep OBS (and capture the studio's OBS mode). If you just want your AI face in a call, FaceLive Camera is the shortest path.
Tips for a clean picture
