Face Swap on FaceTime: The Mac Method That Actually Works
FaceTime's own effects stop at Memoji. On a Mac, a virtual camera gets a fully realistic swapped face into the call.
What FaceTime can do on its own
FaceTime on iPhone and Mac offers Memoji, stickers, portrait blur and reaction effects. None of them replace your face with a realistic different person.
The Mac method
macOS 13 (Ventura) and newer let FaceTime use third-party camera extensions. OBS Studio 30+ ships one, so the chain is:
- Run the FaceLive studio in Safari or Chrome and start your character.
- In OBS, add macOS Screen Capture → Window and pick the studio window. Crop to the face video.
- Click Start Virtual Camera. The first time, approve the extension in System Settings → Privacy & Security and restart OBS.
- In FaceTime, open the Video menu in the menu bar and select OBS Virtual Camera.
Detailed screenshots and fixes are in the any-app webcam guide and the OBS Virtual Camera troubleshooting guide.
On iPhone
iOS does not allow replacing the camera for FaceTime. You can run the studio in Safari on an iPhone to see yourself swapped and record it, but a live FaceTime call with the swapped face needs a Mac.
Apple Silicon performance
FaceLive renders in the cloud, so an M1 MacBook Air performs the same as a Mac Studio. Your Mac only captures and displays video. That is the main difference from local tools that need a big GPU; see cloud vs local rendering.
