How to Face Swap on WhatsApp Web Video Calls (Chrome and Edge)

WhatsApp Web uses whatever camera your browser hands it. Point the browser at FaceLive Camera and your WhatsApp Web calls show your AI face.

How WhatsApp Web picks a camera

WhatsApp Web doesn't have its own camera list. It uses the camera your browser gives it for web.whatsapp.com. So the trick is simple: give the browser a camera that shows your AI face. That camera is FaceLive Camera.

Step 1: install FaceLive Camera

Download FaceLive Camera and run the installer. This adds a webcam called FaceLive Camera to Windows 11. In the app, press Start camera, pick a face and press Transform. Details are on the FaceLive Camera for Windows page.

Step 2: set the browser's camera for WhatsApp Web

Chrome

  1. Open web.whatsapp.com.
  2. Click the icon at the left end of the address bar, then Site settings.
  3. Next to Camera, choose Allow. Then open chrome://settings/content/camera and pick FaceLive Camera in the dropdown at the top.
  4. Reload WhatsApp Web.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Open edge://settings/content/camera.
  2. Pick FaceLive Camera in the dropdown at the top.
  3. Reload WhatsApp Web.

Step 3: start the call

Start a video call as usual. Your preview should show your AI face. If you see a FaceLive card saying “Open the FaceLive app and press Transform”, the camera is connected but the AI isn't running yet: press Transform in the app.

Fixes for common problems

“Camera in use” or a black preview. The browser is still pointed at your real webcam, which FaceLive is already using. Change the browser camera to FaceLive Camera (step 2) and reload. Full explanation: camera in use by another app.

Text looks backwards in my own preview. Browsers mirror your self-view. The other person sees it the right way round.

The call freezes when I click into WhatsApp. Make sure you're on the latest FaceLive Camera; it keeps streaming while its window is covered or minimized. Or press Call Mode to keep it as a small window beside the call.

FaceLive Camera isn't in the list. Make sure the installer finished, then fully close and reopen the browser.

WhatsApp app instead of the browser?

In the WhatsApp app for Windows, go to Settings → Video & voice → Camera and choose FaceLive Camera. See also the WhatsApp video call guide.

FAQ

Will the other person know? They see a normal video call. Be honest with people who'd care; see the consent rules.

Does it work on a phone? WhatsApp on phones can't use a virtual camera. Use a Windows 11 PC.
