Face Swap on Facebook Messenger Video Calls (Computer Guide)

Messenger's own effects are cartoon masks. For a realistic live face on a Messenger video call, use a computer and pick FaceLive Camera as your webcam.

What you need

  • A Windows 11 computer with a webcam.
  • FaceLive Camera for Windows (free).
  • Messenger in Chrome or Edge (facebook.com or messenger.com).

Messenger on a phone only uses the phone's own camera, so a live AI face needs a computer.

Steps

  1. Open the FaceLive Camera app, pick a face and press Start camera.
  2. In Chrome or Edge, open Messenger and start a video call.
  3. When the browser asks for a camera, choose FaceLive Camera.
  4. Already in a call with your real webcam? Open the call's settings (⚙) and change the camera to FaceLive Camera.

Not working?

  • Black screen or "camera in use": your call app and FaceLive can't both own your real webcam. FaceLive needs your real webcam; Messenger needs FaceLive Camera. See the camera in use by another app fix.
  • FaceLive Camera isn't listed: make sure the app is open and live, then reload the Messenger tab.
  • Still your real face: check the camera choice in the browser's address bar camera icon.

Tips

  • Press Stop in the app when you hang up. Minutes only count while the AI face is live.
  • Keep good light on your face for the most natural result.
  • Only use faces you're allowed to use. See the consent rules.

Same steps for other apps

The same "choose FaceLive Camera" step works in face swap on WhatsApp, face swap on Zoom and face swap on Telegram.

FAQ

Does it work in the Messenger phone app? No. Phones can't use an added camera.
